History[]

In 2017, the Appalachian Labor Party (ALP) declared independence to create a state that represents the culture of the Appalachian people, as well as address the concerns of high poverty and oppression. Although there were some sporadic pockets of violence, the separation was peaceful. Alan Hahn, the elected Marxist leader of the ALP, was elected president with 67% of the votes against 5 candidates. During this time, Alan and the ruling party enacted sweeping economic and social reforms to transform the country into the most progressive nation in the western hemisphere.

Economy[]

Appalachia has a mixed economy dedicated to eventually transitioning into a Socialist economy where workers fully own the means of production. However, the ALP acknowledges that, while the country is growing, some capitalist market forces must be preserved to grow the economy.

Military[]

The armed forces were created in 2017 after the declaration of independence. So far, the military has as main purpose being a civil defense force and acting as a national police force.

Politics[]

The Appalachian People's Republic is a multi party direct democracy, where any party can theoretically gain representation in the People's Assembly. Political parties with more than 1,000 members can register with the election bureau to become official and receive funding. However, the Appalachian Labor Party has enjoyed popular support since independence, receiving a commanding majority in the first post independence election, as well as securing the presidency.

The country also has a system in place where citizens can directly petition to pass a law. If a petition shall obtain 10,000 signatures, it will be put to a ballot referendum on the next election year. If it receives more than 50% of the vote, the petition becomes law as if it was passed by parliament.
